LIDIO CARRARO Region:Vale dos Vinhedos
Looking for Importer

Lidio Carraro is a family-run winery that seeks to bring back the essence and integrity of wine, under a purist philosophy. All the process is conducted with minimum interference and maximum respect for the natural expression of the grape and its original terroir.

“The following morning found me at the Lidio Carraro Winery, whose wines I have long admired for their purity of expression. The family wishes to preserve the authenticity of each grape variety, each terroir and to remain totally Brazilian never use oak, preferring that the wine speaks of its soil, not what it is matured in.” Steven Spurrier (February 2013).

At SITT Autumn we present to you some of our wines with quality and distinctiveness recognised in many other international markets, among the wines you can taste is the wine range FACES – the OFFICIAL LICENSED WINE OF 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP™ (talk to Quest Wines Table 19 at SITT about the FACES brand)

Wines produced are made from international grapes such as Tannat, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. We are starting to export and are sure that our modern look and style will appeal to some UK agents or importers.

With cold winters, prolonged periods of sun in the summer, and a naturally fertile soil, the location is ideal for the cultivation of fine grape varieties. With 25 hectares of vineyards located in Serra e Campanha Gaúcha, the company has taken advantage of characteristics that define these two regions: firstly its strong personality and secondly its capacity to surprise. Its limited production, less than 50,000 litres a year, gives an air of exclusivity to its wines. Consequently, all products of the winery’s first vintage sold out quite quickly after they were launched.

SANJO

Email: [email protected]
Tel: +55 11 3168 1521

HIGHLIGHTS: A small winery producing wines at an altitude of 1000 metres. Sanjo is a small winery located in the city of São Joaquim, one of the highest and coldest regions of Brazil. The concept was to produce wines from altitude with the influence and discipline of Nipponese culture. Founded in 1993 by a group of 34 fruit growers, Sanjo – Cooperativa Agrícola São Joaquim highlights the pioneering efforts of a group of young Japanese immigrants and descendants, who in the ‘70s were transferred from various regions of Brazil to São Joaquim. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are all planted and the winemaking process is specially developed to extract the maximum quality and preserve the unique characteristics of the grapes produced in the coldest region of Brazil. The climatic conditions combined with soil characteristics, provide a distinct terroir that expresses itself in different wines.

SANTO EMÍLIO

Contact: Ms Francine Kaga
Email: [email protected]
Tel: +55 11 3168 1521

HIGHLIGHTS: Situated in one of the highest and coldest regions of Brazil this female owned and managed project is in a stage of growth and development.

Santo Emílio Winery – A history of passion for the art of winemaking. The vineyards of Santo Emilio are located in one of the highest and coldest regions of Brazil (1.400m/ 4660ft), at Serra Catarinense, an excellent area for producing quality grapes. Currently 20 hectares are down to vine, with a planned expansion to 50 hectares. We also have a project to build the most modern winery in Brazil. The production is still small; only 30.000 litres of wine, always focused on high quality products that have been recognised by numerous important wine competitions such as The International Wine Challenge, Muscats du Monde and Vinitaly. One interesting feature of Santo Emilio is that is managed only by women. Wines made by womens’ passion and care through the whole process including research, technology, and environmental respect. See another cheerful side of Brazil through our wines.

Harvest Report: 2012, the historic vintage

Posted on November 2, 2012 by | No comments yet

The 2012 vintage is amongst the three best of the last 50 years for Brazil. In the two main regions, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, the quality level of the grapes is exceptional and there is also quantity to sell (696m kg, ie 327m bottles).

“This is the best harvest that I’ve witnessed during my 30 years in Brazil”, says Chilean winemaker Carlos Abarzua, director of viticulture at ABE (Brazilian Association of Enologists). It’s promising for the future as this is the Brazilian “momentum” with two major worldwide events taking place in the country within the next 2-4 years; the World Cup and the Olympics.

I’ll definitely be drinking Brazilian fizz and some of the lighter reds from the South

Posted on November 2, 2012 by | No comments yet

“I’ll definitely be drinking Brazilian fizz and some of the lighter reds from the South”

declares the affable Oz Clarke in his latest Pocket Wine Book 2013. He tells readers about the “fascinating subtropical operation at Vale do Sâo Francisco producing two crops a year of pretty tasty wine” (and currently looking for representation in the UK!) and describes the wines from Rio Grande do Sul: “lowish-alcohol reds from grapes like Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Teroldego can be delightful as can the Moscatos. Sparkling wine, dry or sweet, from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, or Moscato, is always good and sometimes outstanding”.

Read more in Oz’s book which is available in all good book shops, via Amazon, and signed copies are available at all Three Wine Men events. www.ozclarke.com

Peter Richards MW enjoys the ‘wonderful diversity’ of Brazilian wines

Posted on November 2, 2012 by | No comments yet

Peter Richards

This summer, Wines of Brasil organised a tasting for Peter Richards MW whilst he was in São Paulo for a few days.

“It really opened my eyes to the wonderful diversity and potential of Brazilian wines, both still and sparkling”, he commented.

Before enjoying lunch in one of the city’s most up-and-coming restaurants, Brasil a Gosto, Wines of Brasil introduced Peter to producers from Aurora, Pizzato and Salton. Silvia Mascella, editor of the Brazilian wine magazine DiVino Sabores was on hand to give a generic overview and an independent perspective of the 12 Brazilian wines on taste.

The National Wine Evaluation – September 2012

Posted on November 2, 2012 by | No comments yet

The National Evaluation of Wines takes place every year to taste the quality of the new vintage.

This year’s tasting acknowledged the 2012 vintage as a great year for Brazilian wines. Since 1993, the Brazilian Association of Enology (ABE) have been organising the event to benchmark the evolution of Brazilian wines.

This year 850 participants from 8 countries tasted 387 samples entered by 70 Brazilian wineries. Felicity Murray and Richard Ross, both from the UK, joined the group and were able to taste the wines selected.

Wines of Brasil awards 2012 – Results

Posted on November 2, 2012 by | No comments yet

With 8 medals won at the Decanter World Wine Awards and 30 at the International Wine Challenge this year, Brazilian wineries continue to invest in the UK market.

Aware of the importance of competitions for British consumers, Wines of Brasil, as the generic body, encourages its members to send samples to those two competitions. Marcelo Copello, Brazilian wine critic, was judging at the International Wine Challenge this year and was an extra-incentive for Brazilian to enter, as well as Thiago Mendes, the Brazilian IWC Ambassador.

The full results can be found here.
