Portugal’s Wine Awards: Julia Harding MW is the 2011 journalist of the year

Portugals Wine Awards

At the prestigious Portuguese wines awards Julia Harding MW took the crown as Portugal’s 2011 journalist of the year. She will now embark on the quest to search for her 50 Great Portuguese Wines for this much heralded event in 2012. Hamish Anderson from the Tate was also recognised for his contribution to writing about Portuguese wines in the on-trade.

With a fiercely fought battle for National Retailer of the year, The Wine Society just pipped Majestic to the podium. The Wine Society have increased their range of Portuguese wines significantly over the last 12 months and held their very first Portuguese only tasting in London in December. With over 50 wines to taste, the tasting sold out more than 2 weeks before the event took place.

Corks of Cotham and The Bottle Apostle were the winner and runner up of the independent retailer of the year award, and Eyre Bros (winners) and Ransome’s Dock (runners up) were both recognised in the Restaurant of the year category for their great efforts towards promoting Portuguese wines over the last 12 months.

“These awards are Portugal’s ‘Oscars’” said Tania Oliveira, ViniPortugal’s new UK manager, “being able to hold them in the glamorous setting of the Portuguese Ambassador’s Residence made them even more special for us, for the Association of Portuguese Wine Importers, and most importantly for our guests and winners of the awards. We congratulate them all on the fantastic support they have shown the wines of Portugal over the last 12 months, and look forward to a very exciting year for Portugal in 2011”
